You can contact your local home extension office for a soil testing kit. The kits are free and provide a detailed description of how to collect your soil. Once done, you mail it to your state testing lab, normally the fee is nominal or free. It will give you an in depth report of your soil and what you need to do to improve it. Sometimes, the reports are a little tricky to read, if so, again contact your home extension office, there are normally Master Gardeners on hand who can help you with the soil test and provide more experience input on any questions you may have. Soil tests kits that are sold in stores are ok for a quick check, but don't give you a good overall picture of your soil's health.
