Before cutting with miter saw, don't trust the angle of the saw. Actually lay the end you are butting against on top of the piece you are about to cut and draw your line with a pencil and cut it accordingly.

I have done the corner blocks many times. Especially trim going up stairs. Corners that are really off. Beefy ones with crown molding. Even use some upside on crown molding around kitchen cabinets. I have even made my own corner blocks.
