I can't grow lavender outdoors to save my life. Any Suggestions?

I bought 4 plants last year, grew them in a sunny location and they all died.

Where are you located? I'm in central Texas and mine thrive, but I've heard they do well with a little neglect, and I have that in hordes! Mine get watered once a week on a sprinkler system, and that's it. We've had drought conditions here for quite a long time so that accounts for my watering schedule, but experts do say to water deeply and infrequently, when the soil is almost dry. Aside from that, as I said, I pay little attention to my lavender, and it does exceedingly well.
Do you have acid soil? Most of the northeast does, and I see you are in Massachusetts. Lavender likes more alkaline soil, so you might need to amend the soil. I tried to grow it, too, but gave up due to our acid soil.
Also, the kind of lavender matters. It's native to the Mediterranean, so climate matters. There is English lavender, which doesn't need as much warmth. Check online for kinds that do well in your zone.

Lavender will fool you. It looks wilted if it's getting too much water.
