I use oven cleaner and it seems to work if you can stand the odor. I did it outside to lessen the odor in the house and used the bbq scrubber to loosen the stuff.

soak them 1 or 2 days in pure ammonia in an enamel pan. works like a charm.
I have not tried this but have been told to put them in the oven next time you are cleaning it if it is self cleaning
I have found using oven cleaner or grill cleaner works great. I lay them on newspaper, spray and cover with another layer of newspaper. Let sit over night and a light scrubbing with a metal sponge does the trick.
