Try sprinkling soap shavings around them, they can't stand it!
also try blood meal on the edge of garden (will not harm your vegies) or I buy whirly gigs (pin wheels) and put aluminum foil flag on the stick the whirly gigs come on. The wind makes them go and the movement scares the pest. The foil also flutters in the wind for a little extra movement. I move mine around every couple weeks so the critters don't get used to them
plant the seeds, lay a fine chicken wire on top. the plants grow through the wire, but animals can't dig through it. my problem was moles and armadillos so I put chicken wire formed into a box shape (bottom and sides) then after planting topped with chicken wire....NO MORE MOLES OR ARMADILLOS>>>>YAHOO!!!!!!!!!!!!
Make a perimeter with moth balls, (break them up in a plastic bag first) so they will scatter better.
