You can use Murphy Oil Soap or Wood Cleaner and cotton rags to get the job done good luck!

If there is a top coat like poly on the wood, it might have permanently discolored it, so you could also use a stripper on the discolored part, then apply a new coat of the white and poly (get non-yellowing kind). You could also repaint the whole surround in a darker color so the heat damage doesn't show next time. There is a sponge you can buy that works specifically for smoke damage. We used them to clean with at the cleaning service I worked for they do a great job
