The least expensive solution would be paint. You could go with one color or try to fauxfinish it and make it look like bumpy rock. Keep your colors neutral but contrasting from your fireplace color. Hearth might be soap stone. You might consider re-painting the white paint job to blend it with the hearth. Being a decorative painter, I would probably do a faux marble job on it, or you could try one of the gray granite spray paints.
