What is better for a kitchen floor? Wood or tile?

These days it just depends on you and your decorating and budget.

I had read that wood in the kitchen isn't a good idea - water leaves marks, and enough water can warp and stain. Tile is a sturdy option, but it is cold underfoot, and so unforgiving that anything dropped on it will shatter or dent. Vinyl will dull and even tear over time.

We opted, therefore, for laminate flooring which seems to withstand everything. Our kitchen gets a LOT of foot traffic, we have a big energetic dog with hard nails, and four grandkids are always spilling something, as well as hauling their toys into the kitchen. It's been down three years and looks as new as the day it was laid - not even a scratch that I've seen. Just my opinion.

I prefer tile on the kitchen and bathroom floors. Mine have had ceramic tiles for 40 years. Kitchens can be so dirty with grease and spills.

I have wood floors in my vacation cabin kitchen. It is stained and the color is uneven due to where the island is/has been. It is hard to keep clean. The wood floors came with the house, so we left them as they were.

When I build another house, the kitchen and bathrooms will all have some kind of tile in them. I read a tip that said that tile floors were easier to keep clean if the space between tiles was at a minimum.

I am happy with a wood floor coated with satin finish waterbased poly. Wood is easier on the back and legs. Never has a problem with water stains.
