I don't think this would work. The remaining poly would prevent good coverage. I think you'll have to break down and sand.
I'm with Judy. Having been married to a professional flooring installer for many years , I assisted on quite a few jobs . Not only can you not just sand that one spot, (it will look patchy when repaired.) If you try to paint it, you'd have to sand the entire room to get the paint to stick and look good .
