Plain white toothpaste
It's hard to tell from the photo if what you have is actually brass. It almost looks pewter, but maybe it's my screen. Make a paste of baking soda and lemon juice for cleaning brass. But I use Barkeeper's Friend for cleaning brass hardware and it works great.
Ketchup works well on brass. Slather it on and wipe it off. Polish with soft cloth.
White toothpaste
I use salt and lemon juice (1/2 lemon so I have something to scrub with. Then rinse in VERY HOT water, dry and, if you don't want to do it again, coat it with whatever your hardware store recommends - or people here do.
