Container gardening just like any other planting is experimental. What will for for others may not work for all.Do not give up. It may be for different reasons, size of the pot, water, fertilizer, light, insects.
We had great luck last year with potting soil that had fertalizer included in the mix. We had huge tomatoes, good peppers, squash, etc. This was located on our sunny patio.
I don't know if this is an old wives tale or not, but I use old coffee grounds and that works great. Or possibly had no effect at all, and I was just lucky.
A few things to remember when container gardening....Make sure the size of the container is adequate for the plant when it is fully grown to allow for root expansion, etc. Make sure there is drainage in the container so the roots are not sitting in water or mud all the time. drill small holes in the bottom of the container (cover them inside with coffee filters to prevent dirt draining out) or place rocks/gravel in the bottom of the container if you are unable to drill holes. Make sure the pots are placed where they will get plenty of sunlight, and consider using a fertilizer for vegetables as needed. Also keep in mind that things like eggshells and coffee grounds are great for plants, and can be sprinkled on the top of your soil occasionally to give your plants a boost. One tip....whenever I plant tomatoes in a container, I always plant 1-2 basil plants in the same container. My tomatoes are always sweeter, and the basil is a great companion to the tomatoes when you get ready to use them for recipes, etc. Good luck!
I've used coffee grounds as well to add helpful nutrients, and it makes you feel good about a coffee habit, so its a win win!
