I just went thru the same problem, but; the water ended up in my basement. you need to put clay against the house and slant it away slightly, leading the water to where you want it to go (in my case the front road. It now drains away perfectly.
You need to install drains and possibly have the yard regraded. Start asking friends and family for contractor referrals or Google for your area. Get several estimates, and check their license with your states contractor license board before signing any contract. Get help from a trusted friend or family member if there is anything you do not understand in the contract or post your question here so we can help you.
add bark mulch to pad up the ground where it pools rainwater. Plant water loving bushes to drink up the water.
We have the lowest backyard on the block - yard directly behind is much higher & snow melt comes mostly from there. We ditched about a foot at our lot line, filled with gravel & that helped a lot, but my dog still paddled around the back half of the yard. This year we used an industrial pump for 2 wks & pumped to the front lot ditches & it was great. NO paddling for my dog, no standing, dirty water & I could plant early for the 1st time in years. Hope this helps.
I live on hills both from south to north and west to east. The back yard has two terraces and the yard from the house is banked enough to keep water from coming into the house. Where that area meets the bottom of the first terrace turns into a river each spring until the ground totally thaws. We get the runoff from all the yards to the west as it continues down that hill and from the two terraces in our own backyard hill. Grass never grows where the spring river is because it washes away. We have so much shade and dogs feet that the area from there never grows anything but tiny patches of grass and lots of weeds. We are thinking of using pavers in that area, and perhaps stones in the river area. The only problem with that is that we get a lot of silty dirt that closes much of the river area that we have to constantly have to reopen to prevent getting areas that the water won't move. What can we do with the spring river area to prevent it from closing up? It goes from right behind the garage on the west edge of the property to the east edge of the property.
