Succulents are the easier plants .Avialable in several varieties.
Reduce the green space with gravel paths and sitting/focus areas, maybe a pond.
Look into xeriscaping. It does not have to be complicated, but might be something to consider. Google it and poke around. Here is an example link:

You can always use a combo weed and feed to try and kill the weed overgrowth and try and nurture the grass. At least it saves you one step. :) Hope this helps!
Without a picture it's hard to say but it would be an act of love to create a space where she could sit and enjoy the outdoors. I would agree with the first response and get rid of the grass and use gravel and maybe a bit of ground cover to soften the effect.
