I've never undertaken something like this so I'm feeling a little overwhelmed with all the variety of perennial plants/flowers to choose from. Any advice on what plants to mix and that would also give color from early spring through fall. We live in zone 5. Thank you for any help!

There are many hydrangea that like shade, oak leaf among them. These could go in the back. In front, astilbe provide dramatic interest and color. Hosta come in all sizes and colors. Japanese grass are beautiful gold leaves that would be pretty on the wall. In the early spring, crocus would bring a nice bit of color. Sweet woodruff is a beautiful low growing ground cover. Impatience are a colorful shade loving annual.
