Start in the center of the trunk and work toward the outer edges, spacing the holes about 1 inch apart. Fill each hole with liquid glyphosate herbicide until the liquid is slightly below the top of the hole; the glyphosate will drain into the wood and ultimately kill the root structure of the hackberry tree.
A heavy layer of salt around the trunk will work as well. You can opt to water this in with vinegar for a quicker result.
