My hubby and I bore big holes in our stumps and poured Epson Salt in the holes. It takes time, but the stump rotted away and he was able to use an ax to chop the stump in pieces to haul away.
I have heard that you bore some holes into the stump and pour buttermilk in. It will cause decaying of the stump. here is a post "Six weeks ago I bid a job for an old timer. He had two oak stumps about 30 inches in diameter both 8 inches tall. They were cut at the same time. A year ago he had drilled holes in one and poured buttermilk on it. I kicked the untreated stump and it was as hard as it was the day it was cut. I kicked the other and I kicked the whole thing out from under the surface probably 3-4 inches down. I was amazed."

Good luck!
Drill holes and put rock salt or stump out
Folks are correct. Get a Looong drill bit and drill at angle from top edge downward to inside of stump. Keep drilling until it is basically a honeycomb all the way around and up and down. Using funnel, fill holes with Borax (clothes cleaning section at store.) This will take probably 2 yrs. It does work if you have the time.
You could also use a couple of them and let rot naturally and plant flowers, etc to attract bird & other wildlife. Or, I have seen folks build a roof on them and turn into fairy house(s.)
Do not try to rent a stump remover and do yourself. That equipment is a killer (no, really!)
If you live somewhere near a farmer, he/she may be up to pulling them out with his tractor. That should be cheaper but could do more damage to your lawn area.
Good luck.
Most expensive and safest way would be to hire someone to get them out, other wise get someone to pull them up with a big truck or tractor..
