I believe you have to remove it, because it is hazardous to your health. If you cover it up and decide to sell your house you could be liable.
  • Floor over if at all possible. Asbestos is ok as long as it is left in place and not disturbed. Considered hazardous material and to remedy it will be very costly.

As long as you do not disturb the tiles you can lay new flooring over the top. If you choose to remove them you must call a professional as the tiny fibers will float in the air and cause major health problems.

Have a professional abatement consultant come and test the flooring contamination first and he will let you know how safe or unsafe for you to try and attempt replacing it yourself.

I agree with Naomie, floor over it. Just make sure it's completely covered.

As long as the are not cracking or separating do not do anything to them. You can legally cover them up with new flooring. This is called "encapsulating" and allowed by the EPA. By the way, may I ask how do you know they are asbestos tiles? Did you test them?

My friend recognized them as asbestos tiles... my house was built ~1962 & the tiles are 9 x 9 or so.

Yes, 9 x 9 tiles are stiff and have asbestos in them. Good for your friend. As I stated, if they are in good condition they are not giving off any asbestos and you can cover them up with new flooring.

Thanks so much William! that's my preference, I don't wish to disturb them and can't afford to have professionals come in. All the best!
