Try adding roll-down or Roman shades, mounted inside the room. There are some pretty shower curtains on the market and since they are meant for wet environments, they are a bit more durable then regular curtains, You might add some to the inside of the room, on some nice-looking regular curtain rods, closing them as needed.
We use the roll up roman shades our covered porch in the late afternoons.
A cheaper idea is drop cloths. They are sold at all hardware stores and very inexpensive. Take at look at them, I think you will be shocked at how many people are using them for curtains, on porches, etc...
Add bamboo roll down shades or make some curtains out of fabric shower curtains or flat sheets.
have you thought about tall patio plants in front of the windows...they enjoy the sun-you enjoy their beauty and shade
Take a look at this gals patio, she did so many things right and it appears she did it all on her own. Shade is just one of her many ideas. She posted it here on hometalk. She also did seating, eating area, storage, privacy, lighting and plants. All this on a 3'x10' patio. Unbelievable stuff - and she makes it look so easy.

glad you like the idea....even if you move, you take the plants with you...I lived in Manhattan for several years and know the problems you face....plants also create noise buffers---sound waves are distorted...and finally they help filter the smog by absorbing carbon dioxide and releasing oxygen
Thanks for all the feedback ladies n gents and i think im going to try the shower curtain shade and some plants!! 😃
