Have a friend come over and help you go through it. It is always easier if you have someone who will give you an honest opinion on what to keep and what should go. Once its boxed up donate to a woman's shelter or bring to the thrift store.
The general rule of thumb is, if you haven't worn it in 1 year get rid of it. I prefer to donate. If you are hanging items that can be folded and put in a drawer do that. They sell hanger extensions that hang off one hanger and you can add items to that. You can also purchase multi skirt and pants hangers. That should help.
I put EVERYTHING hanging in my closet on the bed and tried on everything. What fit and looked good got returned. What looked ok, but not worn in the last season went into the donate pile, and everything that looked old, dated, faded also was donated.
Get the biggest cardboard boxes or trash bags you think you can handle full. Start pulling out your clothes. Anything you don't want to try on goes in the box. Leave them on hangers. It's faster and some thrift stores and donation sites need the hangers. Go through your t-shirts, jeans, dress clothes, sweatshirts, coats, bathing suits, then shoes, nightclothes, and underwear. Ladies in a homeless or abused women's shelter might really appreciate these things. Goodwill, Salvation Army, and independent thrift stores will usually pick everything up and leave a receipt if you call and schedule. By my math, you should be down to 6 1/2 feet of clothing to be spread out now. Ahhhh! Best wishes 😇
I highly encourage you to read the book, The Magic of Tidying Up, by Marie Kondo. It is very easy to read. My house is, according to my friends, very organized, but this book changed my thinking about my “stuff.” After reading this book, I cleaned over 20 large trash bags of clothing, jewelry, and shoes out of my neat and organized closet. This was a year ago and I can’t even remember what I got rid of and have not missed anything.
Mm. Every spring and fall i switch and have extra suitcase I store my winter clothes or summer clothes. Just a mention if you don't wish to get rid of too much.
Reverse the hangers in your closet so that everything is facing the wrong way. anything you wear should be returned to the closet with the hanger the right way round. Anything still on reverse hangers after 6 months needs to go. You haven't worn it in 6 months!
Thank you and I have a feeling everything will be gone in 6 months. Good idea. Janice
I put them on my bed one section at a time and have a throw away, and donate box handy.
Start by taking 2 feet worth of clothing out of your closet. Sort through. Divide into what you really like and what you don't. Give the don't pile to Goodwill. Do this until you are done with all 25 ft. If you still don't have enough space repeat the process. Don't try to do it all in one day. Take your time and really think about whether you need all those items.
buying those tiered hangers with about four or five holes you can space the clothes downwards. I use them it helps, however i dont have as much as you.
I was going to say something like Janisco said. I recently started clearing out my closet. I no longer work and I've lost a lot of weight so I had a lot to go. Every time I went into my closet, I'd choose 2 things I knew I didn't want to keep. The things I'm not sure about went into a pile to try on. I'll do those 2 at a time as soon as I finish the racks. I know it will seem slow, but it doesn't make it seem like such a big job. I have arthritis in my back and can't stand for very long, so doing it this was works for me. I'm 3/4 through my closet and most of what is left is items to try on. Time to start doing that - 2 at a time every time I go into my closet.
My favorite way to clean my closet is to put all of my hangers backwards on the rack, then once I wear it I'll change the hanger back to facing forward. In 3-6 months, I'll take all those clothes still facing backwards (that are in season) and try to re-sell or donate them. You don't wear them now and the chances you will in the future are slim!
keep a shopping bag on the floor in your closet and when you put something on that you don't like the way it looks, put it in the shopping bag. when the bag is full, go through and throw away anything that is too worn and donate the rest. don't forget to get a receipt for taxes.
Donate to a woman's shelter , get a tax write off, then go home and color coordinate what you have left. Turn your hangers around and if you have not worn an item and turned the hanger the other way in 6 months also get rid of the itemsyou have not worn during that time. Easy to tell which ones you are not wearing .
