Yes, Leather Painting is a Thing!
Have you tried a good leather conditioner? I bet that is all you need to keep this chair going.
Check at Walmart for Leather Re-Coloring Balm: Here's what the info says: Leather Re-Coloring Balm renovates the color and aspect of all leather items both old and new. There are 21 colors formulated for use on leather from a dark to light shade. It works great at re-coloring areas that have been exposed to sun light or direct heat, and is ideal for coloring cat scratches and re-coloring dried out and faded areas. The re-coloring balm 100% absorbs into your leather so will not rub off onto any clothes. Note: This product is designed to work on absorbent leathers only. To test your leather for absorbency, simply drop a small amount of water onto an undamaged area of your leather and wait 5-10 seconds. If the water sinks into the leather and leaves a darker patch, you have absorbent leather. If the water stays on the surface, your leather is not absorbent and you will need to use Leather Colorant to restore its color. Only one application is necessary. With use, the leather will fade again but this can be reduced by using the Leather Protection Cream The Leather Re-Coloring Balm renovates the color and aspect of all leather items both old and new. Looks like you just need to redye the piece. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A41JbxvMFcg I've done a sofa like this and it almost looked new.
First, I would clean it with saddle soap as directed on the container. You can order leather dye in various colors on Amazon. Follow directions for sealing.
I would think they make a leather conditioner that is tinted just for this reason. You could probably check with the furniture store or the manufacture.
Here's a good one showing the cleaning process for those uneven areas. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A41JbxvMFcg

leather conditioner first....if the color difference needs a touch up- shoe polish the waxy in a can type.
Many "leather" sofas, even expensive ones, are really leather-clad or leather-bonded. That means it not really leather, it just plays one on tv. Disappointing.
In any case, there are special kits in the speciality paint section of paint departments. One is for giving a surface a leather look. Examine any samples available and read all the box sides for information.
On the other hand, you can spray paint all of the damaged parts as long as the fabric is not ripped. You'll need to use light sanding and cleaning to remove any loose leather bits. Then find a vinyl spray in the right color and go to town. If you need or want to, then buy vinyl paint in the color you need, or mix the exact shade you need. (If you have a few rips, why do you think duct tape was created? Haha.)
Also, find out what caused that much damage: pets, belts or shoe buckles, jeans hardware, or any pressure at all. It's clear where you sit! If you can change something, like covering the sofa with a soft blanket, do so, or just repaint later if needed. Best wishes 😇
It's likely that a good conditioning with saddle soap will solve the problem. Be sure to rub the saddle soap in very good and let the leather dry good before sitting.
Saddle soap and AUSTRALIAN LEATHER SEAL. I bought an old english saddle...it was bent, hard, and cracked. But I knew what saddle soap and Leather Seal could do.
Saddle soap cleans and conditions...then you follow up with Leather Seal Restore Cream. ( I posted pic's the products) Note you may have to let it sit overnight.
These have always worked for me. I also used them on an old leather foot stool I bought at a flea market...Worked Great.
