I am having good luck with Tuberous Begonias this year. We went bright in color, the yellow really shows up great, as well as the orangey red color.
I used to do a red, white and blue theme. Red geraniums, white hanging petunias and blue lobelia. I always added green spiky things for height and green ivy to give an overflowing look. Have fun!
I have done lavender with success. Snapdragons did well too. We just did red and white mums in my girlfriends boxes, looks so pretty! It is very hot here and these all work well in the shade.
