Can a ceiling fan /light be wired to fit a receptacle?

We're off the grid at the cottage and were wondering if an electrician could change the wiring of ceiling fan with lights so that it could be plugged into the wall as opposed to being hard wired. The reason we would like to do this is primarily to cool down the cottage and we can only run a minimal amount of electrical appliances with our generator.

If you are "off the grid" doesn't that mean NO ELECTRICITY ? To answer your question anything with wires can have longer wires added & a plug put on it... anything that doesn't pull too much power such as lamps, fans, ceiling fans, clocks,. You couldn't do that with a dryer or fridge or heater.

Yes yes yes. I cut a long wire matching the colors of the wires on a new ceiling fan, using connectors. Then I dropped them through a small short piece of rubber hose that I then connected to the ceiling and wall with U shaped attachments. I then attached a 3 prong plug so it would be grounded.

I would use on-wall conduit, often intended for offices similar to Wiremold. Both metal and plastic (at Lowes) are available, and are paintable. I'd mount an electrical box to the ceiling and paint it, then run the conduit across the ceiling, "90" at the wall, and then down the wall to a nearby ext cord from your genset. Run a simple 14 ga extension cord inside the Wiremold. Cut off the female end and wire up inside the box. Look at the texture of the ext cord (one side is ribbed) if you want to observe polarity. The wide tang on your ext cord plug is N, to be wired to the white wire on your ceiling fan.

It can be done, but ensure at least 14 AWG wire is used.
