They make stencils for almost anything. I would prime the wood first, then stencil on your faux stone pattern, then seal with a non yellowing marine type varnish to withstand the elements.
Get a spare 4x4 timber and give it a try, before starting on the wall of timbers. I would use stain instead of paint and maybe put a darker border around some of them, kind of shading them. Stains come in the light gray and it looks great on wood, and you can try mixing your own colors to get the ones you desire.
I don't see why you couldn't do this.
After you find all the paint supplies you need, then use a sealer like Thompsons water seal. This looks like water and seals the wood leaving no color. If you don't seal the wood it will drink and drink your paint without end. You can seal rocks and cement with it too. After your done making it all pretty I would use some kind of shellac for outdoor use following the instructions on the container. Have Fun!
