You need to train your dog. Yes it can be done, I have 6 and they know their limits. Here are a few links to get you started. Dogs just want to please you and receive lots of love in return. Be consistent and gentle but firm. They will learn in now time!

Hello Carmrn; Animals hate anything with Ammonia, and Moth Balls.
I personally have not used Moth Balls, as I do not wish to hurt any animals.
If they are digging, they smell something that is appealing to them. I would spritz Ammonia close to where they are digging. Please do not get it on your plants!!!
I hope that this helps you!! Take Care!
Walk your dog for at least 20 minutes 2 times a day..he is bored. Bad habits develop when they do not get exercise...if you can't do this if you have a treadmill put him on it....
we put water balloons in their favorite holes, covered lightly with dirt & they stopped digging after getting wet. won't work for dogs that like water
There are some commercial products that claim they will stop dogs from getting on any area you have dusted or sprayed with their product. I'm sure that others have some "green", organic ingredients solutions. Keep searching the internet - For gardening/lawn stuff I find that searching Google is very good. Amazon is also good. You may have to reword your search to get god or any results.
You could get a motion detected cat/dog deterrent sprayer that fits on the hose, and slowly train them to not go in certain areas. They have them on Amazon.
