Well Good Morning Stacy Lane! :) I have just the thing you're looking for and it is so kid friendly the kidscan even help ;) I got rid of a huge patch of poison ivy this way after being told there was no way to get rid of it without chemicals .. HAH! What you do is give your weeds their last supper, then tuck them into bed ... and they go to weed Heaven, where ever that is: Give the area a good watering, then whereever the weeds are at you cover them with a thick blanket of newprint and water thatdown well. Then you cover the newsprint with some heavy cardboard that you weight down on the edges and sides with bricks tree limbs, whatever will do the job, and wet that down too. The idea is to deprive the plant from any sunlight or oxygen. Leave the "sunblock" in place until next season. The weeds and their roots will be dead and you can fertilize the area and plant what you like there. The beauty of this way is that you do NOT have to worry about kids and pets being harmed, and the layers of paper can fit into any spot you need them to fit, and be as large or as small as you need them to be ... no worries of chemical drift from spraying or shaking poisons through the air to the weeds. So that's it ... I hope this has been of some help to you. Good Luck Stacy, and thanks for using Hometalk for answers :)
The answer to so many of life's DIY questions is vinegar. In your case it's white vinegar in a spray bottle.
Two great and safe ideas - pour boiling water directly on the roots. They die instantly. Also, 1;1 solution of water and vinegar. Spray the roots.
