Easy Closet Makeover! Custom Organizer & Dollar Store Bins
What I had to do was decide what I wanted in my closet. Current clothes? Storage? I removed everything that didn't help me get dressed every day. Then I installed a new rack system and purged some of the clothes. You want to decide what belongs in there and what doesn't. Memories can be stored, photographed, or turned into something else. My son-in-law has a quilt made from t-shirts from his many sporting events. I've saved pieces of items from my children's growing up years, and have been piecing them together over the years, hopefully to have a throw of memories one day.
Store them in Rubbermaid type containers on the upper shelves and the floor where you have shorter clothing items like shirts and skirts. Hubby didn't want dresser so he uses the plastic drawer storage in the first part of the closet to hold his underwear, t-shirts and socks and one for casual cotton pants and shorts. Works well for him and still has 3/4 of the closet for hanging clothes.
Put the memory stuff in a box or tub and store elsewhere. Then it is a matter of purging the rest and hanging up in a logical order, long dresses, short dresses, suits, slacks, jeans, long sleeved blouses, short sleeve tops, vests etc. Everything should be in sections. Then take it a step further and arrange by color in each category. Taking it even further, ditch the hangers and purchase Joy Mangano huggable hangers. Saves a ton of space and everything is neat and tidy when opening closet doors.
What about the storage bags that you pull the air out of with your vacuum? Worked great for some quilts I wanted to store.
Cynthia has the right idea. You can 'downsize' your memories without purging them. Set aside 1 bin for memory to-do projects and sort it into things like: scrapbook stuff, photo album, patchwork these into a blanket, make a multi media collage, etc. Once you can trim down your memories into a sizeable project, do it and free up more space. As for other organization... I use the space saver bags for off-season clothes and store them in a bin or on a shelf. You'll be organized in no time!
