Is the stone dark from use? If so, you can clean the rock with a mixture of water and TSP which will remove any soot and/or dirt. Here's a picture of my fireplace which I cleaned using the above method when I inadvertently had the fire going and forgot to open the flue.
You can paint the mantel for a different look.

Hello Beck; You can use Paint on rocks. However, that is a huge job!!
Maybe all you need to do is to replace the mantel, and that would make the area look much more appealing to you???
