it depends on the kind of hydrangea you have. If they are blue or pink, they should only be trimmed right after blooming because they will bloom next year on old wood. If they are white, you can trim them in the fall because they will bloom on new wood in the spring.
If you want your hydrangeas to bloom find out which type they are before you prune! Macrophylla (the mopheads and lacecaps) and the oakleafs bloom on OLD wood - so you want to prune them just after they bloom.
The Annabelle, Paniculates, and Endless Summers bloom on NEW WOOD - so you want to prune those in January or early spring.
Fall but remember that they bloom on old growth so they will probably not bloom again next year.
Follow the advice given by Jody (California) ... you first have to determine what type of Hydrangea you have before trimming them down or you might be cutting off next year's blooms!!
