I have the same problem. Too heavy and clumsy even when empty so it is a problem to wash it. (I have arthritis in my hands) Did you find anything? I am still searching.
I don't know that there's any substitution for them and I think you'll just have to bite the bullet and order them online at Amazon, Ebay or Walmart.com. Some brands are around $1 each and the Reynolds brand from Walmart is about 50 cents each.
If you use something else it may not be able to handle the heat and may melt into the food you are cooking in your crockpot. If you want to line your crockpot I would stick with what is made for that purpose and nothing else.
I definitely agree with the heavy weight, it would be nice if they would include some kind of basket at least to take out the roasts with, otherwise I just serve out of the pot.
You can use parchment paper in a Crock Pot. It makes cleanup a breeze. Its not being lazy, as someone suggested. If you have arthritis, those pots are heavy. They're heavy if you don't have arthritis.
