How about bi-fold shutters on the open half of the wall, like this: http://hornsbyshutters.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2014/09/bi-fold-shutter-operation.jpg
If you want night privacy, I had two large old divided light windows about the size of that opening, that tilted out, hinged at the bottom, with 2 chains allowing them to open up 45 degrees, closed with 2 eye hooks. You could just make 2 wood panels you lift up or let down out of say pallet wood. or you could make them lift up... http://cdn.jamaicacottageshop.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/01/window-48x24-ten-true-divided-lights-1.jpg
To make them safer you could also put some pulleys on one or both sides, or those soft closing gas pistons. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01909AHZY/ref=asc_df_B01909AHZY5151476/?tag=hyprod-20&creative=395033&creativeASIN=B01909AHZY&linkCode=df0&hvadid=168556243666&hvpos=1o2&hvnetw=g&hvrand=255275275170483491&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=c&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9033057&hvtargid=pla-307084026415

Make a curtain! King size sheets or drop cloths work well.
Yes, I like the idea of a curtain too. Nice and light weight so that it moves with a gentle breeze. Good luck.
Roll up bamboo shades. Have one on my front porch in Texas, but
to block the afternoon sun rather than night time view.
With the half wall you have a bamboo or cane curtain would look nice. I have one across the four windows in my livingroom. You can roll it up as far as you want when you want the sun to come through. I got mine almost eighteen years ago and it still looks brand new. I have had it across two different window areas and liked it as it covered all the windows instead of having numerous window coverings to cover the long area.
Regarding the idea to use bifold shutters- although they are very attractive looking and will meet the needs of both privacy and light, unless they are made for Exterior, or Outdoor use, do not waste your money and time with trying to have them installed. If they are made for interior use only, they will Not withstand the changes in temporature, and moisture of outdoors. They will very soon rot, crack, fall apart, and it will be a huge mess to take everything out and start new.
You are welcome. I have learned the hard way from making mistakes. Although sometimes at the onset it may require more money spent, to achieve a lasting quality to the project, there is no substitue for a job completed correctly using the right materials.
I like the curtain idea too, but remember to get something waterproof because it's outside. Shower curtains or special outdoor fabrics are good options, and you might even find one with weights on bottom to solve the wind issue. Good luck!
Shade cloth blinds are available at Home Depot, Lowes, etc. I have one on a west facing screened patio and it works great!
Thanks for the intel!
