Add a full length mirror or two on open wall spaces.
First, paint it a bright color, more on the pastel side of colors. Dark colors tend to make rooms look smaller. Keep the curtains simple and light, no drapes or heavy rods. Perhaps some sheers with a fabric shade or mini blinds, or sheer valance across the top, something that will let lots of light in.
Good Evening Kathleen :) I've always heard use light colors for walls and floors, ditch the curtains and us hanging plants at different heights, and/or potted plants on window sills at varying heights (I used both in my apartment) , and always do something that will make eyes move upward rather than around the room. I've also heard scale dow nthe size of the furniture.; make it smaller so your room appears to be roomier. HAHAHA, I'm sorry but that would NEVER work in MY case because I have a large family in EVERY way, so unless I want to be uncomfortable myself, and pray my furniture will stand up under family gatherings (literally), I've alwaus had to use "normal" sized furniture, and have never been sorry (always had plenty of room for comfort). Below are a few links with ideas that might appeal to you :) Thanks for using HOMETALK for ideas. Good Luck!

Mirrors to bounce the light about and very light colour walls and Pastel shades.
Try placing mirror strips on the wall opposite the windows so light is reflected off the mirrors and it gives the illusion of more area through the reflection. Or, try a windowpane wall hanging. It can give the illusion of another window. Or, maybe a full wall scenery mural. I have seen then with the scene of an opened door looking out onto a veranda or even a beach, a garden path, or a mediterranean portico. They all look so real and so inviting. Hope one of these suggestions do the trick!
Keep the furnishings smaller scale and try not to put too much in...also keep decorations (pictures/knickknack/wall art to a minimum...you could also hang a large mirror on one wall as a feature. ensure that the lighting is bright and white!
Use light wall paint and light weight curtains. The darker colors make the room feel small. You can also use a mirror to reflect light around the room to make it feel larger.
Keep the furniture small in scale. Don't overcrowd the room with too much furniture and decor.... less is more. I would stay with lighter colors and smaller patterns, even a monochromatic color scheme would help.
Add a few tall elements like a floor lamp to make the ceiling appear higher.
Keep your window coverings light and airy like sheers or cellular shades.
