Instead of beans, there are little red pea like flowers. This has never happened before. Why is this so,or will I still get beans. The vines are growing quite well otherwise

    The flowers become beans.

Bees will pollinate the flowers in order for you to have beans, without flowers there will be no beans.

If you saved them from last year's crop, it may be seeds from a cultivar that reverted back to one of the crosses it took to make the hybrid. Still pretty! ;)

    Flowers=beans!

Many beans produce flowers that are actually quite showy. Enjoy yours, and the beans that will come after.

I love these plants - I grow them in purple, red, peach, and white... I believe the purple was one of President Thomas Jefferson's favorites ;)

Thank you everyone. I bought the packet of seeds this year and thought they were the same as last years, which didn't have red flowers. So now I am going to enjoy flowers and beans :)

If you have ever grown peas, you will know that they do the same, flowers first then comes the pea pods or in this case the beans. Enjoy the display and let nature take its course.

Love the plant beans or no beans!! Nice that you will have beans to enjoy after enjoying the flowers!

I feel so silly,It didn't occur to me that the beans are just the same as the ones I usually plant only red flowers instead of white. I saw the red and thought it was something different. :) the plant is lovely even without beans and so easy to grow too.

Your plants might have reverted to producing "scarlet runner beans". Wait until the flowers produce pods - and see what you get!

I just realized that your post said "runner beans" in the subject. Well - your beans are doing just that - they grow like they're "running" ( they will climb and prosper) and produce lots of red flowers because they are likely Scarlet Runner Beans.

thank you,I planted the same beans last year and they had white flowers, then long green beans,so these through me with the red flowers. I feel a little silly now :)

Look like Sweet Pea that was growing on my property. Should be fine as long as you planted it....if it just popped up...be careful, it can be very invasive!

that's why I bought them..not that interested in that variety of bean! just love the showy flowers!

I have often grown these (scarlet runner beans) on a trellis because they are beautiful and can make nice shade if strategically placed.
  • Jeanetteann Jeanetteann on Feb 28, 2014
They are pretty Mary. I planted them last year but the flowers were white and then green beans followed. I was thrown a bit when the red flowers appeared even though the packet of beans had a picture of green runner beans on the front.

Jeanetteann don't feel silly we are all humans... helping each other to grow our favorite things... I have mine on arches and trellises and the humming birds love them. I've never eaten the beans.

Oh they are so nice to eat CeeJai,I push them through a little shredder and stir fry them with spring onions and capsicum, then add a tin of crushed tomatoes and heat through. MMm just delicious,so hope these little lovelies reward me with lots of beans.
