I have two pieces of cloth backed vinyl auto upholstery fabric I lay over my washer and dryer when they're not in use. The fabric comes in many colors and since I only needed a small amount, it was not expensive.
What about a counter?
I use a large padded counter top drying pad on top of the dryer. As for the washer, it is recommended to leave it opened when not in use or smells will develop. Another idea...if the space allows is to put hinged flat doors on the walls left and right of the washer and dryer. They can fold up against either wall when using your appliances. You can paint any color! Post what you decide, please!
"I understand your issue. My new washer and dryer started to show light scratches a few months after use. We considered lots of options including adding a permanent countertop. Instead, however, we came upon a simpler solution. We bought a tabletop surface from Ikea. We glued felt on the surface in contact with the machines. It fits tight but is removable. I love the surface area. Cost $20.00!"
I use a folded flannel-backed vinyl tablecloth, wipes off easy and is thick to protect.
