Dollar Store Silver Tray Wreath

I love shopping at Dollar Tree for inexpensive craft supplies! (If you do, too, you might enjoy my post on the Ten Best Craft Supplies to Buy at Dollar Tree!) On a recent trip, I picked up supplies to make a fall wreath for my back door, including some of their fall leaf garlands. I also grabbed a silver tray from their entertaining and party supply aisle.
I decided to turn this tray into the base of my fall wreath! Once I got it home, I painted the center of the tray with chalkboard paint.
Then I worked on "antique-ing" the remaining silver part of the tray with other colors of acrylic paint. I wanted it to be less shiny and more vintage!
After all of the paint dried, I cut apart the leaf garland and hot glued leaves to the front.
I attached a ribbon to the back of the tray with sticky hooks, and then I used chalk to write a friendly greeting on my chalkboard wreath. (I tried to write "fancy" but probably need some more practice! :-) )
When that was finished, I hot glued the ribbon down the front of the wreath. Then I hung my wreath on my back door. It is the perfect size for my little porch!

I have plenty of chalkboard paint, but I've never tried painting anything but Mason Jars, and I totally stink at those... I have the same Dollar Store platter (oval shape), did you do anything to prep the surface? How many coats did you use? I don't think I can handle another chalk paint epic fail, it may crush my feelings as a crafter, lol! Maybe the spray paint chalkboard would be better for me?
Have you ever tried shaving the tip of your chalk on two OPPOSITE sides, so that you have a wedge tip as wide as your piece of chalk? Hold it constantly at a 45 degree angle. Also, you will have to print to make it fancy. Start and stop each letter as needed to stroke from the top down or the bottom up to connect letter parts, never changing the 45 degree angle \ to your writings. Calligraphy!!
How long does the writing last on the outside door, or is it protected from elements?
