When decorating a small home you want to keep everything at smaller scale. You also need to go with the theory that less is more, the more that you put in the more crowded it will seem. Instead of a full size sofa you may look at a loveseat and chair combination.
Walls the same color as window covering. Floor coverings the same as walls. Use color for accent. Furniture which can be multifunctional, which provide storage. Use a ;large dresser or side board for a TV. This provides a of of storage.
Some other ideas is to make your storage look pretty, so you can store things in containers, but cover them in fabric or contact paper to make them part of the decor. Hanging mirrors gives the illusion of more space. Also, keeping with light colors and neutrals will help keep the space looking light and make it look larger.

Well your house may be small (how small exactly?) but your bodies are the size they are and you need seating comfort. this is the same room in two different modes. First is with a piano (behind door to right) and two antique but small chairs and a large antique sofa. Second picture shows space as we use it now. The room is 11' X 15', has two windows and two wide doorways. It is where we sit to watch t.v. We have a sofa, two comfortable chairs, a chest, a table, two footstools. But there is a clear walkway and while it is not the easiest room to clean, it is very comfortable. If you post pics of your space it will be much easier to give advice.
