Choose a light shade that coordinates with any adjoining rooms.
I agree with Naomie--choose a shade that flows with the adjoining spaces. Mahogany looks great with cream, gray, tan, greige, sage, blue... A light color will make it pop.
I just painted a hallway to brighten it up. I used a golden yellow. I would get a few samples and look at them though out the day with the different natural lighting.
Pale aqua, buttery yellow, sage green.
I like a vanilla ice cream color.....my place was wired in the 1950s, no overhead lights in the living room. The lighter color helps reflect the lamp light.
I love a pumpkin color-with just the hint of yellow in it. Warm but bright.
I would go with a pinkish red, it is a lovely color by candlelight and very flattering to women. Plus a not too strong departure from that color family. Some colors are great, but not necessarily to eat with.
I would use a mushroom color beige. I would stay within the beige family for continuity and just add some color with table cloth etc.
