Type in fireplace remodels in the "find your next project" spot in Hometalk. LOTS of ideas. You will need to seal it up. I liked the wood circle idea, and there is a gorgeous fireplace screen from Plow and Hearth in stained glass; you could get a piece of glass or an old window and paint a design on it to put in front of the fireplace with lights behind it. Paint it and put a faux log in it. There are firebox inserts run by electricity or gas that you can insert. Have fun!!
I painted my fireplace as I do not use it living in Florida and put house plants in front of it or if dark room put a decorative scren that has a mural on it.
Why not highlight it and make it a focal point with a binch of candles or a small state of some sort? Or just board it up and tile over it.
Have you considered buying a fireplace insert? They are very affordable and safe. You can place it in the existing fire box and can change the surround with any material. You can use tile, stone, stucco, etc. in any texture since the fireplace isn't using a flame.
I am guessing that you have plastic over it as the flue is or chimney is damaged. I had this issue for a few years on my masonry / brick fireplace until I bought the bullet ($7,000) and paid to have the whole thing taken down and rebuilt. ...In the mean time - they make a product that is insulating that goes up into the empty space, to insulate it. I did this, then added glass fireplace doors which blocked off more of the air coming in. I then had a decorative brass fan that spread out in front of the doors and it looked very nice. No one was the wiser, that it did not work. I also used clear tape to seal off the doors completely.
If you don't plan to use the fireplace for ambiance or heat, have the chimney sealed. Then clean the inside of the fireplace and spray paint the inside flat black. Use the open space to house a decorative wrought iron candle stand or seasonal flower arrangements.
Melectric logs r nice
maybe if you have a big slab a wood you can paint a fire or just logs on. I've seen people just put candles in a non working fireplace
We have a large rectangular piece of styrofoam that I wrapped in black felt fabric. It goes behind my fireplace screen when we aren't using it. It insulates the room.
I've usually seen reclaimed wood covers with some folk art painted on it, but this Pinterest has some good ideas..... I like the faux wood one..... https://www.pinterest.com/dreamrose50/fireplace-screens-covers/?lp=true
I also like the faux window using an old window... https://i.pinimg.com/736x/49/5b/5e/495b5e144bd8379a4af479c356f1a79e--window-panes-window-art.jpg

I also had my fireplace removed from my 1940s home, and it cost $10k, and I had a faux tile fireplace built inside in the 5' wide space with herringbone large 26"x6" tiles with an electric fireplace/heater insert.... with a remote.
You could have a piece of plywood or even drywall cut to size and then either stain, paint, or stencil a design onto it and then adhere it to the existing wood portion to seal it off better and also create a conversation piece.
Hi Mary: Well, what you can do is get a nice fireplace screen to put in front of it, or an insert. Or, close off the shields in the chimney that let the smoke out, and clean and paint the bricks inside of the fireplace. Then put an arrangement of fake flowers or whatever else you may like in there.
