If you can do it immediately, use BABY WIPES and rub until it disappears... this is for a small amount of blood.. anything larger , pour some lemon juice on the spot, rub it out the best you can and soak in cold water for a few hours ....then wash in the washer and hang to dry.. the dryer will tend to set blood in the material if you do not soak it first....
Hello Diana! Best advice is to soak in cold water while stain is still fresh and do not place in dryer unless stain has been removed. Putting stained clothing in the dryer will set the stain in. Here are details of what to do:

Sour stain remover will usually remove blood. Not sure it will work if the item had previously been washed With the stain.
This works every time. Use peroxide, just pour over spot.
Try peroxide.
Peroxide. We used this at work when we got blood on our uniforms. My granddaughter gets nose bleeds and have had to clean blood off of sheets bed spreads pillowcases. Works every time.
Hydrogen peroxide
Diluted peroxide
I've used hydrogen peroxide on fresh blood or on material that has not yet been washed. Pour the hydrogen peroxide on the bloody spot, and either rub the material together or use a brush. Keep on till the blood stain is gone. Also, Corox makes a stain remover that works well on clothes that have gone through the dryer.
try hydrogen peroxide
Good Morning Diana McNamara :) I understand you are asking how to remove blood from cotton fabric, which could mean a blouse or it could mean a mattress .. either way, the concept of removing the stain is basically the same (except that with a mattress in order to reduce moisture you'd need a vacuum to remove the stain remover). With all that in mind, the link below tells you how to get an old blood stain out of a mattress with 3 different methods (and may I suggest the poultice method is the closest to what you would need if we are talking about clothing) ;) Good Luck Diana, and thanks for using HOMETALK for answers :)
