oh yes. We live in Georgia and never cover them. We have even cut ours to the ground and they came back full and beautiful. if you live up north you may want to get the opinion of your county extension service.
Take a large plastic trash can and put it over the top of your fig trees; you may need to cut the trees down somewhat, but they will grow again in the spring. --Before putting the trash can on top, tie the branches altogether.
Cover? I've had fig trees around for my entire life. Never covered period. I do live in Central South Tx The pruning website given earlier is very good.
