Here's a link to an idea I posted in my fb group https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=1358181970931605&set=gm.291762317950710&type=3
One idea would be to collect wood pallets from businesses, they are free, here are some diys for building pallet shelves:

You could also cover boxes (from amazon, bulk foods, etc) in either shelf liner or fabric to create decorative storage:

How about making your own?
walmart has large wooden crates for a little over 9 dollars. You could get some of those and stack them
the cd's and DVD' s can be digitalized and stored on a computer or jump drive. Frees up a lot of space on the book shelf. There is software to get it done. There are digital players like a mica or a ruku to put them on your tv screen. The books...I've got about 700 tucked away on a hard drive. There are web sites that will let you read a book from your computer screen, or down load for free. The cookbooks...copy the recipes that look inviting to a " blank" book...or note paper in a binder. I don't of anyone who has made each recipe in a cook book. Takes a bit time to get it all done....but worth it.
