Gosh! I Love the Stairs and personally wouldn't change them, but I guess you would need to use ESP Primer then undercoat and then top coat, but if you are going to paint the tread s too I suspect it would wear badly.........

Are you talking about the treads and not the risers? If that's the case, I would follow the advice of Dysko7710. Painting wood treads is easy and my treads have been painted for many years and has lasted well. It looks like your treads are the linoleum surface.
