you might want to use a primer so that none of the color bleeds though, otherwise, I don't think you have to do much more that the standard cleaning and filling of holes.
Prime first, or use paint w/ primer (more expensive) In long run it will be less time and less coats of paint.. It also depends on color you are covering..if very dark or Red.. ask local HD or Lowes.. where ever you shop, best product for darker colors. Good Luck :)
Just like with any paint job, you need to make any repair to the walls, wash the walls, (TSP is my go to for that), prime with a good primer like Zinsser or Kilz, then paint.

The sponge painted walls I've seen have had an uneven texture due to the way the paint was applied. If you'd like to repair that, I would sand it lightly to remove the texture.
If you like the sponged look, go ahead and paint over, but if not, sand the walls till smooth.
Start with a primer to make sure everything adheres well. If you like, you can sand down the walls a bit for a smoother texture, or let the sponge-painted texture come through.
