Also if the room is long and narrow, put your furniture across the narrow part. It will make your room look more square (and therefore larger) then if you put it on the long side. That just makes it look long and narrower. Be sure you use light colored paint and hang mirrors if you can. Keep any curtains on your windows as light-weight as possible so that the natural light comes in, that will help make your room look airy. If it's possible, consider removing a wall that goes to the next room - such as a dining room. Even if you use the rooms as two spaces, it will make the whole area look bigger. Just be sure, if you do this yourself that you don't knock down a load bearing wall that's holding up your home. If you can, watch some of the shows where they decorate - either to fix things up or to stage homes for resale, that might give you some more ideas as to how to open up the space so it looks larger. People need comfortable chairs to sit on in a living room, but you don't have to get the largest possible. We are in the process of trading out a wide chair for one that is narrower, but the comfort should be the same. We have a sitting room that is about 11' X 15', two windows, 2 wide doorways. You want to keep a "walking" path clear. If people can pass by easily the room will not seem too small.

Multi-functional pieces are great, like coffee tables with storage and/or a lift-up top. Or stacking side tables.
