Is it advisable to trim citrus trees?

Our citrus trees have grown tall with the fruit out of reach. Usually one trims trees from the bottom but is it possible to trim them such that they are shorter and wider rather than tall and thin? We have lemon, lime and grapefruit trees.

I have a lemon tree that I've cut to be a bush, but I've been cutting it for years. If they're already trees, I'd advise you contact your county's agricultural commissioner for some advise. If you do severely cut, be ware that you may not get fruits for several years.
Yes you are supposed to trim citrus trees! Call local tree trimmers and get bids. This link will help you out!

Trim it flat on the top, our lime tree loves us for doing it. You want the tree top to get as much sun exposure it can.
