If you have a local Batteries Plus, they will help you.
Call your trash service. Many have hazardous waste round up services a few times a year. I would start there. If they do not collect them, then check with city, town, village authorities to see what recycling and hazardous programs your area has in place.
Also call waste management. They will tell you where to take them.
They are hazardous waste and most landfills have a place to put them.

i found this to be a great site. when i lived in upstate NY, we had a local hardware store owner who took them back for a discount - depending on where you're located, you may have to do some research, and this site is a great way to begin.
thank you everyone. I will take them to Batteries Plus.
