Hi! I use old ones for storage in my craft room. They are also great for keeping things organized in almost any room.
Paint them and make them more modern.
Can you share a photo? That will help with ideas!
Depending on size, style, etc. they could be used in a few spots in bookcases as bookends, or decoratively here and there on the shelves. They could corral such items as rubber bands, small office supplies and be used in an office. I'm currently using a couple of mine for big flower arrangements on my countertop to block the kitchen faucet from view as its the first thing a person sees when they come in the front door. Also could work well in a bathroom area to store small items such as cotton balls, hair scrunchies, etc.
Lots of ideas

Can you actually use them as canisters on your counter? If you could clean them up, sounds like they could be great to just use and have on display.
You can use them to hold craft items.
You could take the tops off and use a s vases paint them a diffrent color use under the kitchen sink for small items
You could paint them with craft paint, or cover them with pretty paper or fabric. I would use them for craft storage.
Grady: You could use them for screws, bolts and etc in your garage.
Put plants in them or use them to store craft supplies, like paint brushes.
Display them, put a plant in them, use them to store items in.
