What is an inexpensive way to landscape the side of my house?

Where you live and how much sun that area gets will determine what to plant. A word from a gardener who learned the hard way......make sure you buy from a reputable and knowledgeable nursery, don't fill complete area until you give plants time to fill in and enjoy what you do.

Some type of ornamental grass would look nice

depends on what direction the side of your house faces....sunlight and drainage will determine what plants will do well....and of course the temperature ranges in your area. please remember to plant well away from your house. Plumeria need plenty of room to grow...looks like they would not be a good choice for the area pictured....

Dependent on your USDA zone, soil type, and light conditions, check with your local extension office to find out what kind of native plants would work for your area. I live in Arizona so my Plumeria has done much better in filtered light.

I you want to get rid of the grass - mark off the are and kill the grass off with grass killer - in about a week pull the dead grass out and put now NEWSPAPER -ABOUT 4-5 SHEETS THICK and then mulch. Work newspaper around plants and you will have no weeds - or very few.

I would Xeriscape it - low maintenance yet pleasing to the eye.

if you want to do the whole side of your house. I would transplabt your three shoots far enough about so they wont crowd each other. Then put in some flower plants that will come back each year then some annuals you can switch out. Maybe some bigger rocks that could act as anchors would ve cool too.
