Just be careful so you don't plant too close to the trees (you could kill the root). You also shouldn't raise the soil around the trees. I would mulch around the trees, and maybe create another border bed to house the plants.
Ajuga comes in green or purple leaves, has small blooms for short periods, but is low, grows quickly and fills in bare spots without choking out other plants.
Since you also have very little room to mow or weed, I have a suggestion that is labor intensive to install but then it's "done for life" so to speak. Install a rock garden.

How about some hostas?
Things that bloom need sun so use shade plants in areas that get no Sun.
