Dig up the entire plant, trim down the greenery (you want roots to develop, not more greens. Using a sharp shovel or knife, cut the plant - in half or quarters. Replant each piece, and use good soil but not a lot of fertilizer. B1 is good to encourage root growth.

You can divide hosta almost any time of the year. Now (fall) is a good time. Dig out the whole plant or dig around and under the part you wish to remove (don't worry if the plant looks lopsided afterward, it will fill in quickly). You can use many methods to cut through the dense roots of the plant. Shovels work well. I have sharpened the edges of my shovel with a grinder wheel to make it easier to cut through the tough roots. I have also used my reciprocating saw with a long blade to cut through as well as a garden hand saw. You can be pretty brutal with the plant to no ill effect as they are very tough plants. If you have two pitch forks, you can dig out the whole plant but leave it in the hole. Push the pitch forks in together where you want to divide the plant but facing the opposite direction from each other then pry them apart. This will do the least damage to the roots but again, these plants are really tough so just cutting through the roots should not do any lasting damage.
