When should I severely prune plants for the fall/winter season?

Should I wait till green chlorophyll has mostly left or lost color? Or is a time-related effort better?

Hello. I do it when they start dying off. However this year we have had a mild fall so far in WI and my plants all still look great, but I will start pruning them this weekend because I will have the time.

I trim and prune each plant, bush or tree based on it's type. Some, I never touch!
Don't cut so much at so time. Cut 1/3 now, then 1/3 in the spring.

We are in California where frost is VERY late -if it appears at all- .... Thanks for responding. Do you think the leaves changing/losing their chlorophyll may be an appropriate marker as well?
